Live Binder Update!

Guys! Great news!
.
.
.
.
I updated Live Binders!! You can now access all the STUFF you should have in your binder for ELA. Rubrics, assignments, graphic organizers, you name it! I have added material from the Six Traits unit we are completing - just look under the corresponding tab. So check it out, print away and get those binders organized.

You are welcome!

Google Docs in the Classroom!

I've got a team of student leaders piloting Google Docs in first period. Check it out!
Eventually I'd like all my kiddos to be experts in Google Docs. These guys will teach other students about this awesome technology.

...And We're Back!

We are moving and grooving here in Room 311. Language Arts classes are working on the Naughty Narrative, describing a time they were badly behaved as a child. We drew our inspiration from the short story "Charles" in our literature book. Hopefully we'll get some outstanding examples posted here on the blog next week!

Geography students are dusting off the cobwebs on their map skills this week. Last week we created a flip book for our Geography Journals to help us study land forms. We'll have a mini quiz on Friday this week. This week we'll be setting up our passports. Our journey around the world begins next week in Canada! Get excited, people!

Finally, I updated the class calendar for this week. I'm working to get copies of all handouts and assignments that I have electronically filed into our Live Binder, so be sure to click on over and check that out. You can find the link in the right hand column. UPDATE: for the time being, I'm going to put only LA stuff on the LiveBinder. Once my master's classes are over (I graduate in December!) I will hopefully have more time to work on getting geography added to the mix. Thanks for your understanding!

PS - I have SUCH a great group of Cougars this year! We are getting off to a great start, and every day I'm impressed with what you guys know. GO SEVIES!

Just a few more days of summer...

Well, guys, I'm sitting in my classroom writing this post and feeling lots of mixed feelings! I can't believe the summer is nearly over. Just three more days until I'm officially back at work, and five more days until you all arrive at my classroom door. I've been working pretty hard this week trying to get everything ready for you. I've moved furniture, stood on desks, hung posters, copied countless papers...phew.

But! Before summer officially ends I need to announce the winner of our summer bucket list challenge and the Orange Leaf gift card. Congrats to Skylar, who was the ONLY ONE to post anything over on our Wall Wisher. Let this be a lesson to you future sevies - you have to actually use the blog to benefit from it. : ) Good job, Skylar - I know your summer was eventful and everyone else probably stayed in the jammies in front of the TV the whole time. Hehe! Anyway, I'll get out to Orange Leaf this week and pick up her gift card. Skylar, come visit me on the first day of school for your frozen yogurt hook up!

I'll see you cougars soon!!

Half Way There...

Summer is flying by! I always think of the 4th of July holiday as the mid-point of summer vacation. I know we don't officially go back to school until August 15, but lots of your teachers will be hard at work before then, myself included. In fact, I was just up at SMS today. I tidied up my room, rearranged some of my furniture, hung up lots of pictures of Rylan and helped Mrs. Coleman get her room set up as well. We also tackled some planning for Geography, which we will  both be teaching for the first time this year. We have some great ideas, including a student passport. I can't wait to share those with you! I hope everyone is enjoying summer, because the fall will be here before you know it.
And don't forget, the Lawrence Public Library's Summer in the City reading program is still going on and it's not too late to sign up!

Rylan is ready for the Fourth in those shades!

Summer Bucket List

The end of the school year is rapidly approaching (whee!!) and that means summer vacation is almost here. I get sad thinking about you guys spending the entire summer inside in front of a TV. So I pulled together a list of a whole bunch of things you can do this summer so you will stay busy and entertained.
Visit our LiveBinder to download and print a copy of the complete list: click here!
Sneak Peek! Here's the first of two pages!

Are you wondering why you should check all these items off the summer bucket list? I've got some motivation for you. Visit our class Wall Wisher (http://wallwisher.com/wall/summerbucketlist) and post each time you check off an item. Your post just has to tell us what you did and how you did it. If you feel extra motivated you can post a picture of what you did. The students with the most posts will be sent a $5 gift card to Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt at the end of the summer. Wahoo!!

Enjoy your summer - spend it wisely. Get out there and use your imagination and creativity.

See you next year!

Getting to know YOUR blog!

I want to take a few minutes to point out some useful features on the blog. All this stuff is here for YOU! So use it. :)

At the top of the blog, just underneath the title, you'll see a couple links. One is Home, one is my About Mrs. Hart page, and the other will take you to the SMS website. Keep an eye on this section as I'm sure I'll be adding a few other links and pages to the blog as it grows.

On the right hand side, I've added a bunch of gadgets. Some of them, like my Shelfari and Twitter feed, are just for fun. But some are important!

The Live Binder link is really important. It will take you to an online three-ring binder that I've set up for our class. It has tabs (just like dividers in your notebook!) for some of the units we've worked on. Under those tabs you will find sub tabs that contain all kinds of goodies - links, assignments for downloading and printing and other stuff! So check it out.

I also added a bunch of Hot Links for you. These links will take you to places around the internet that you probably already visit - you can link to Skyward so you can check your grades, you can link to First Class (the school email client) so you can email your teachers, plus I added the lunch menu so you will always know when the next chicken nugget day is! Now all these links are in one place. You're welcome!

Questions? Ideas for other gadgets I should add? Email me: kahart at usd497 dot org (remember to type it like a regular email address; I wrote it like this so the spammers don't get me!).

SMS Fight Song

I thought you'd like to see the video we shot a couple years ago, when SMS was still SJHS! The entire school gathered together and sang our fight song. It was quite the experience! This is one of the many things that makes South such a special place.

Lyrics:
We are the Black and Gold
brave and bold are we.
We fight with all our spirit
to push us to another victory.
So stand up and give a cheer! (woo!)
Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight.
This is the Cougar battle cry
so come on Cougars fight!
Rah, rah, rah rah rah
rah, rah, rah rah rah
rah, rah, rah rah rah
Goooo Cougars!

I figured out how to post pictures!

Look out, everyone! Now I can easily share pictures of our classroom antics. I'll be sending home a permission slip, so if you want to see your smiling face here, get your parents to sign off!
hopefully we don't have too many of these happening in class... :)

Here I am flipping out on the Sky Bike at Science City.

Posing with Sir Isaac Newton at Science City.
And because you know I can't help myself, a snap of Rylan and me in our KU gear.

Plans and Purpose

I thought I'd begin by outlining the purpose of our blog, so you all know what you can expect and help hold me accountable!

  • The blog will serve as a means of communication between me, you, and your family. It will keep everyone in the loop in regards to what is going on in class.
  • The blog will contain a class calendar that I will update each month. This way you can keep your planner up to date, even from home!
  • The blog will be a place where you can come to obtain homework and class assignments. I will post links to all the assignments that I have electronically so that you may download them for printing.
  • The blog will occasionally be a way for you to earn extra credit. I may post links or extra assignments for you to complete and turn in at school. You will be rewarded in extra credit points or Cougar Bucks.
I will update the blog every week, on Fridays after school so it will be ready for the following week. Eventually I'd like for all of my students to have a Google account so that you can all post comments to the blog. I'm picturing book reviews and journal entries being on located totally on the blog at some point.

While I work on getting this set up around here, check out the About Mrs. Hart page, my Twitter feed, and my Shelfari! Enjoy!

Welcome!

I've decided to start a *new* blog! I like the format of Blogger better than the blog over at Edublogs, and it's much easier to use. So here we are! Stay tuned for updates and fun features as I work on building the blog.
